Greece at a glance
From ancient ruins that witnessed the birthplace of democracy to white washed villages overlooking a vast Mediterranean sea- Greece has a lot of offer and it may surprise you. I was impressed with how walkable Athens was, how fantastic the food was, and the general beauty of nature mixed with architecture we found. Greece has more than enough to keep the history buffs and nature enthusiasts both enthralled for weeks. (or as long of a trip as you can manage)
Is it safe?
Yes although awareness is key. Be aware of pickpockets in crowded areas and use discretion when solo travelling at night.
Best time to visit:
Late April- Early November. I’d avoid July and August due to heat and overcrowding. We visited the beginning of May as it was just warming up and found it to be a perfect time for weather and crowd levels.
Language:
Greek, although it was pretty easy to get around with only English, especially in more touristy locals.
Currency: Euro
Best way to get around:
Public transport was fairly effective in Athens and on the islands. I’d most recommend using public transport when in cities or on the islands. Other options for exploring the Greek isles include renting 4 wheeler/ ATVs or cars.
Top things to do:
- The historical sites of Athens
- Roadtrip to the ancient site of Delphi
- Climb to the monasteries of Meteora
- Hiking around Santorini
- Island hop the Greek Isles
